The ever-evolving global cyber security landscape

Data security in the cloud concept

We’re always interested to read the latest trends in particular from the Mandiant Cyber Security Forecast which sets out key areas of focus for the cyber security industry.

As the global cyber security landscape shifts, it’s never been more important to stay one step ahead of cyber attackers. This Mandiant Forecast, as always, is available to help those in the cyber security industry anticipate and adapt – keeping up with ever-evolving threats in order to protect against malicious cyber security threats in 2023 and beyond!

The report highlights Global cyber forecasts to be aware of in 2023. Here we’ve summarised a few key areas to be aware of:

1. More Attacks by non-organised and non-nation state attackers.

Attacks from North America and Europe will be initiated more by younger people, for bragging rights and to embarrass firms rather than for monetary gain.

2. Europe to surpass the United States as the most targeted Region for Ransomeware.

The global ransomware threat continues to be a key issue, with the US being particularly susceptible. However, there is emerging evidence that attacks in other regions are gradually climbing and Europe may soon become number one on the list of affected nations by 2023. The United States has certainly taken a bold stand against these instances of cyber aggression but whether or not it successfully curbs such activity remains unclear.

3. More extortion, less ransomware.

Over the next 12 months, criminals will still be turning to extortion but we could see a dip in actual ransomware attacks. Ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) providers are responding by updating their software for data theft and coming up with new ways of publicly shaming victims – overall it’s set to be an interesting year ahead!

4. Enterprises Will Lean into Password-less Authentication.

It’s no secret that corporate credential theft is an ever-growing problem for organisations of all sizes. But, the good news? This year looks set to be a turning point in secure access technology with Apple, Google and Microsoft leading the way! They’re making significant strides towards rolling out consumer-based passwordless resources – paving the way for even more advanced solutions to hit the enterprise market.

Cyber security awareness - anticipate and adapt

It is important to be aware of the current threat landscape and equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to help protect against cyber-attacks.

The above is only a short summary of some of the important areas highlighted in the Mandiant Forecast 2023.
